  • star rating  Charming Historical Masterpiece - Visited the castle for the first time yesterday and were so pleased we did. It was a fairly quiet day which was nice. The on site staff from the... read more moment we arrived at the entry kiosk to the car park attendant and all the in-house staff (tea room, room guides) were so friendly and helpful. A great first impression. We arrived just in time to join the outside tour hosted by Elizabeth? who was a lovely, personable and knowledgeable lady. It was a lovely day and we were shown around the Rose Garden as part of the tour. We knew that the castle was still lived in by the Saunders Watson family but it was great that we were able to access the important historic rooms which they still use. Yes, some of the areas were cordoned off but the main historic rooms were free to enter. We didn't have time to do any of the walks around the castle, they range from easy to challenging but plan to return to do this. Stunning views across 5 counties from the castle make it a wonderful location.

Went for refreshments in the tea room.
Very nice tea room & very pleasant staff.
It was a boiling hot... read more day so I asked for Iced Coffee.
The drink was very nice But it was served in a jam jar! - Awful!
No class in a jam jar!
There are plenty of beautiful glasses at low cost available in charity shops, buy some of those for the Tea Room.
    No jam jars please.

  • star rating  A great day out for everyone - Took a day trip with the family and it is one of our favourite places to go. We always visit the tea room before taking the tour of the castle.... read more We always take a picnic with us and then walk the trails after then finish with a Sunday lunch at one of the pubs nearby. It’s a shame that the look out is now closed, hopefully it’ll reopen one day.
