Victorian Christmas

Come and experience Christmas Eve in 1849 at Rockingham. Our guides will transport you back in time to a Victorian-era Christmas celebration, complete with candlelit Christmas trees, roaring fires, and beautiful period costumes. The atmosphere will be filled with the charm and warmth of the 19th century, providing you with a unique and immersive festive experience.

We offer 2 different types of tours on different days of this event. Please read the full description below before booking Victorian Christmas.

WEEKDAY GUIDED TOURS

Thursday 28th & Friday 29th November

Thursday 5th & Friday 6th December

Take a guided tour of the Castle, led by one of our knowledgeable guides who will be dressed in character as a Housekeeper, Butler, Governess, or Footman. Each guide will take on the persona of their respective roles and share fascinating insights into how Christmas preparations were done in 1849.

WEEKEND FREE FLOW ADMISSION

Saturday 30th November & Sunday 1st December

Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th December

Enjoy free flow admission to Victorian Christmas. Your visit is self-lead, our guides will be in each room of the Castle, in full character and telling the stories of the Castle on Christmas Eve 1849.

During your visit, you’ll have the chance to encounter Charles Dickens himself, as he roams Rockingham Castle on the weekend, free flow admission days of this event. He’ll be interacting with visitors, sharing tales of his own holiday traditions, and engaging with our costumed guides as they prepare for Christmas and a Servants’ Ball to celebrate his visit. Step into a lively scene from Christmas past and meet one of history’s most beloved storytellers.

Overall, this Victorian twist on the festive season promises to be an enchanting and educational journey into the past, providing visitors with cherished memories and a deeper appreciation for the holiday traditions of the 19th century.

Please note that this is not a Christmas Market event. Our Castle Gift Shop will be open during Victorian Christmas and fully stocked with festive decorations and presents!

You can enjoy a festive treat in Walker’s House Tea Room. There is seating in both Walker’s House Tea Room and our overflow heated Marquee, reservations are not required.

Registered carers receive free entry at this event when visiting with a disabled person. Please book your paid tickets then email the office with the booking confirmation and proof of your carer status. An additional ticket for the carer will then be added to your order. Please allow 3 working days for this to be organised.

Historic House memberships are not accepted at this event.
